Benefits of Stainless Steel Wire on Aviaries

Image

Safe for birds and other animals

Zinc can be toxic to birds – and galvanised steel wire is coated in zinc for added corrosion protection. That’s why you should always choose stainless steel mesh for your aviary mesh needs – don’t risk harming your birds or the environment surrounding them!

Image

Minimal maintenance

Aviaries can get dirty, fast! Stainless steel resists dirt and grime and is easy to clean and sanitise. This makes your job as an animal carer much easier and can reduce the time you’ll have to spend cleaning.

Image

Strength

Stainless steel has a high tensile strength across the board. This makes it hard to cut or gouge through, so you can be confident that it’s safe and secure for a range of applications. It can even withstand high heat without losing its strength, which makes it a great choice for industrial applications.

Long term life cycle and performance

Stainless steel is also corrosion-resistant, so it’s long-lasting and doesn’t break down while it’s hard at work. This means you’ll also avoid contaminating your aviary residents’ food, air, and water with rust.

Low environmental impact

Steel is a material known for its longevity and reusability. It’s 100% recyclable, with no loss of quality during the recycling process. So, you can rest assured that you’re making a solid investment when you choose it for your aviary mesh.

Building your aviary: what stainless steel is right for you?

Need help selecting mesh for your project? No worries! We offer a truly wide range of stainless steel mesh options, so here’s a guide to finding the one that best fits your needs.A note: While we partner with many companies that fabricate pet cages and aviaries, we do not design aviaries or enclosures. If you would like to get a custom-made aviary, please get in touch with our sales team and we’ll be able to point you in the direction of one of our many quality aviary builders.

Choosing between welded mesh rolls and welded mesh panels

Welded mesh rolls are the perfect, flexible solution for covering gaps and covering existing structures. For creating a more rigid structure from scratch, panels are a clear choice. Just find the right sizes for your structure, weld and secure them, and you’ll be ready to go!

Choosing the right grade: 304 stainless steel or 316 stainless steel

The difference between 304 and 316 is the presence of molybdenum. While 316 typically contains between 2 and 3% molybdenum, 304 does not contain any. Molybdenum provides excellent corrosion protection – especially in high chloride environments – making 316 a stronger performer in this regard. So, if you anticipate that your mesh might be exposed to particularly corrosive circumstances, 316 is a top choice. However, 304 is still corrosion-resistant and perfectly suitable for use in most aviaries where chloride exposure won’t be a major concern.

How to choose the right aviary mesh aperture

The wire’s aperture refers to the size of the window between the individual wires in the mesh.At Stainless Mesh Australia, we stock a full range of stainless steel aviary mesh aperture sizes and styles for pet cages and bird cages alike. Ranging from 6.35mm vermin-proof snake mesh to slotted mesh to large welded mesh panels, there’s something to suit all kinds of enclosure builds. You can see our downloadable specifications lists located at the top of the page for more information. So, what should you be considering when you’re choosing your aviary mesh aperture?

What you’re keeping inside

Smaller birds – like canaries, parakeets, or finches – require smaller apertures to stop them from escaping. Larger birds – like parrots or even chickens – won’t need such small apertures. However, the aperture isn’t just to keep birds in – it’s about finding good viewing properties, too, so you can see your birds and they can see out. And, of course, there’s another safety consideration to keep in mind: what needs to stay outside of your wire mesh.

What needs to stay outside

When you’re choosing your aviary mesh, be mindful of what needs to stay outside your enclosure – the things that could harm your birdlife. Predators like snakes or vermin like mice are factors to consider. The smallest aperture we offer is 6.35mm and can provide an exceptional level of protection against common assailants. Remember, even larger birds like chickens and small animals like guinea pigs are susceptible to attack from snakes. As always, it helps to err on the side of caution if you’re not exactly sure what the hazards in your space might be, or if you’re not sure what kind of animal will permanently inhabit your aviary. It’s about finding the right protection to give you peace of mind, after all!

How to choose the right wire diameter

Picking the right wire diameter is also largely determined by the kind of bird you’re housing. As a general rule of thumb, the larger the bird, the larger the wire diameter will have to be. You’ll want to ensure that your birds don’t bite or scratch their way through the wire, as well as ensuring that any predators can’t do the same. In addition to this, it’s critically important that you monitor your aviary for any signs of damage – some individual birds can be more destructive than others! Remaining vigilant and inspecting your cage mesh regularly is the best way to ensure your aviary remains a safe place for your feathered friends.

Bigger Birds
For larger birds like parrots or cockatoos, you’ll be up against a pretty strong beak – it’s best to look for something with something around 1.6mm or higher.

Medium birds
For medium-sized birds like cockatiels, African love birds and even chickens, 1.2mm is recommended.

Smaller birds
Smaller birds, such as budgies or finches, will often be okay with a diameter of 1mm, as their beaks are smaller and less capable of manipulating wire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose stainless steel mesh instead of new galvanised wire mesh or galvanised steel wire?

Stainless steel is non-toxic for birds and other small animals who might call the aviary home. Galvanised mesh has been coated in zinc for extra corrosion protection, and zinc can be toxic to birds. For this reason, new galvanised wire mesh or galvanised steel wire should be avoided when choosing a material for your aviary. Sometimes, you might see someone recommending new galvanised wire mesh and simply removing the excess zinc spikes. While it’s technically possible to remove those zinc spikes and provide a safer environment, we don’t recommend taking that risk!

Do you provide prefabricated aviaries?

We do not, but we can put you in contact with several high-quality aviary construction experts that we’ve worked with over the years – just get in touch.

Can I use the mesh for purposes outside of aviaries?

Absolutely – it’s suitable for housing other small animals like guinea pigs, too. Or, for creating other structures altogether. Some people use our aviary mesh rolls to prevent pests from entering into their gardens, or even as a climbing structure for plants. It’s a truly versatile product and we’re always happy to help you choose which wire mesh works best for your project!
