Key Benefits of Stainless Steel Bushfire Mesh

Image

Heat and ember protection

Stainless steel bushfire mesh acts as an ember guard across vulnerable gaps and openings, helping restrict burning embers from entering the building.

Stainless steel is a non-combustible material, making it particularly well suited to bushfire protection applications where the mesh may be exposed to heat and ember attack.

Image

Gutter guard

Bushfire mesh can also be used as a stainless steel gutter guard. Screening gutters can help prevent leaves and other debris from building up while still allowing water to flow through the mesh.

Keeping gutters and surrounding roof areas clear of combustible vegetation and debris is an important part of preparing a property in a bushfire-prone area.

Durable and corrosion-resistant

Stainless steel provides excellent strength, durability and corrosion resistance, making it suitable for long-term external applications exposed to wind, rain, moisture and changing Australian weather conditions.

Our product range includes both 304 and 316 stainless steel options, with 316 marine-grade stainless steel providing particularly high corrosion resistance for harsh and coastal environments.

Maintains visibility and airflow

A fine mesh doesn’t necessarily mean completely closing off an opening. Depending on the application and product selected, stainless steel mesh can provide ember protection while maintaining airflow and visibility.

Typical Applications of Stainless Steel Bushfire Mesh

Bushfire ember mesh can be incorporated into new construction and suitable retrofit projects to help protect vulnerable openings around a building.

The most appropriate mesh and installation method will depend on the opening, required aperture, BAL rating and other project specifications.

Bushfire Mesh and Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) Requirements

AS 3959:2018 – Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas

A Bushfire Attack Level, or BAL, is used to describe a building’s potential exposure to bushfire hazards such as ember attack, radiant heat and direct flame contact. The BAL assigned to a property influences the construction requirements that may apply, including requirements for protecting particular openings.

For stainless steel woven wire mesh used for relevant bushfire protection applications, AS 3959:2018 specifies a maximum aperture of 2mm. Stainless Mesh Australia’s bushfire mesh products listed on this page have apertures between 1.5mm and 1.67mm.

Bushfire mesh should be treated as one component of the overall construction system rather than as a way of making a building “bushfire-proof”. The required materials and construction methods vary according to the project’s BAL rating and the particular part of the building being protected.

Your building may be classified under one of six BAL ratings:

  • BAL–Low: The bushfire risk is considered to be very low.
  • BAL–12.5: Protection requirements account for ember attack and radiant heat up to and including 12.5kW/m².
  • BAL–19: Protection requirements account for ember attack and radiant heat greater than 12.5kW/m² and up to and including 19kW/m².
  • BAL–29: Protection requirements account for ember attack and radiant heat greater than 19kW/m² and up to and including 29kW/m².
  • BAL–40: Protection requirements account for ember attack, an increased likelihood of flame contact and radiant heat greater than 29kW/m² and up to and including 40kW/m².
  • BAL–FZ (Flame Zone): The highest Bushfire Attack Level, involving potential exposure to direct flame contact, ember attack and radiant heat greater than 40kW/m².

The most appropriate bushfire protection measures depend on your property’s BAL assessment, building design and specific application. If you’re unsure about the requirements for your project, check the applicable Australian Standard and seek advice from an appropriately qualified building or bushfire professional.

How to Choose the Right Bushfire Mesh

Not every stainless steel mesh product is suitable for every bushfire application. When comparing bushfire mesh, consider:

  • the maximum aperture required for the application
  • the relevant Bushfire Attack Level (BAL)
  • where the mesh will be installed
  • the required wire diameter and mesh strength
  • 304 or 316 stainless steel
  • environmental exposure, including coastal conditions
  • required roll or sheet dimensions
  • airflow and visibility requirements
  • the installation method and surrounding construction materials.

Our stainless steel bushfire mesh range includes different aperture sizes, wire diameters, widths, lengths, grades and finishes to suit different project requirements.

If you’re unsure which specification you need, contact Stainless Mesh Australia with the details of your project and we can help you identify the most appropriate product from our range.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is stainless steel bushfire mesh?

Stainless steel bushfire mesh is a fine stainless steel mesh used to help protect vulnerable building openings from ember attack. It creates a physical barrier that helps restrict burning embers and debris from entering areas such as windows, doors, roof vents, eaves, weep holes and roof spaces.

2. How does bushfire ember mesh help protect a building?

Bushfire ember mesh helps restrict windborne embers from passing through vulnerable gaps and openings. Embers can travel ahead of a bushfire front, so screening potential entry points can form an important part of a building’s overall bushfire protection measures.

3. What size mesh is used for bushfire ember protection?

The appropriate aperture depends on the application and relevant construction requirements. AS 3959:2018 specifies a maximum aperture of 2mm for stainless steel woven wire mesh used in relevant bushfire applications. The stainless steel bushfire mesh products available from Stainless Mesh Australia have apertures ranging from 1.5mm to 1.67mm.

4. Why is stainless steel used for bushfire mesh?

Stainless steel combines strength and durability with excellent resistance to corrosion and outdoor exposure. It is also non-combustible, making it well suited to bushfire protection applications.

Stainless Mesh Australia supplies bushfire mesh in 304 and 316 stainless steel, depending on the product selected.

5. What grade stainless steel is best for bushfire mesh?

The most appropriate grade depends on the environment and application. Our range includes both 304 and 316 stainless steel. Marine-grade 316 stainless steel offers particularly strong corrosion resistance and can be a good choice for harsh, humid or coastal environments.

6. Where can bushfire mesh be used around a property?

Depending on the building requirements and installation, bushfire mesh may be used around:

  • windows and doors
  • gable and roof vents
  • eaves
  • underfloor areas
  • deck enclosures
  • gutters
  • skylight covers
  • weep holes
  • other gaps and ventilation openings.

The mesh and installation should always be appropriate for the specific opening and applicable BAL requirements.

7. What is BAL-rated bushfire mesh?

BAL stands for Bushfire Attack Level. A property’s BAL rating reflects its potential exposure to ember attack, radiant heat and direct flame contact.

Mesh used as part of bushfire-resistant construction needs to satisfy the material, aperture and installation requirements that apply to the particular BAL level and application. Stainless Mesh Australia’s bushfire mesh has apertures below 2mm; however, suitability should always be considered in the context of the complete construction system and applicable requirements.

8. Does bushfire mesh need to comply with Australian Standards?

Mesh used as part of bushfire-resistant construction needs to meet the requirements applicable to its particular use. AS 3959:2018 covers the construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas and includes requirements relating to mesh used to protect certain openings.

If you’re uncertain about the requirements for your building or BAL rating, consult an appropriately qualified building or bushfire professional.

9. Can stainless steel bushfire mesh be retrofitted to an existing property?

Bushfire mesh may be incorporated into suitable retrofit projects as well as new construction. Existing openings such as vents, eaves, weep holes and other gaps may be candidates for screening, but the appropriate solution will depend on the building, opening and applicable bushfire requirements.

10. Is bushfire mesh the same as regular insect mesh?

Not necessarily. While some stainless steel bushfire mesh can also function as insect screening, general insect mesh or flyscreen shouldn’t automatically be assumed to meet bushfire construction requirements.

Mesh selected for bushfire protection needs to have the appropriate material, aperture and other specifications for its intended application.

Our heavy-duty bushfire mesh range can also be used as security screening.

11. What sizes and types of bushfire mesh do you supply?

Our flexible and tough bushfire mesh is available in a range of roll widths, including 915mm, 1220mm and 1525mm options. Our heavy-duty bushfire mesh is available in sheets ranging from 750mm to 1500mm wide.

Refer to the product tables above for the aperture, wire diameter, grade, dimensions, open area and finish available for each product.

12. Can I install bushfire mesh myself?

Installation requirements vary depending on where the mesh is being used, the building and its BAL rating. While some applications may be suitable for experienced DIY installation, the mesh needs to be installed correctly as part of the overall construction system.

If you’re unsure, work with a suitably qualified installer or building professional, and check the requirements for your project.

13. How do I maintain stainless steel bushfire mesh?

Regular inspection and cleaning can help keep stainless steel mesh free from accumulated dirt, salt, leaves and other debris.

Wash the mesh with mild detergent and fresh water as required, particularly in coastal or exposed environments. Avoid steel wool and abrasive cleaners; a soft brush or cloth is generally more appropriate.

It’s also worth periodically checking the mesh and surrounding areas for damage, debris or gaps that could affect its intended function.
